The Old and the New

We are looking for a designer for the new artwork of Bosburcht Festival. A new festival that takes place twice a year at a beautiful, historic location, Kasteel de Berck. A centuries-old castle with a rich history.

What makes the event special in relation to the location is the merging of contrasts. The combination of old and new creates an exciting and surprising whole. The castle symbolizes history, elegance, and tradition, while the festival represents the future. The past is reflected in the architecture of the building, the classical castle garden, the walls, the furniture, and the paintings. The future is represented through modern music styles, innovative artworks and installations, progressive stage and lighting design, and the visitors.

By seeking out these extremes or sometimes bringing them together, we find a way to place the classical forms and architecture of the castle in a new perspective. But conversely, the perspective of the old castle also changes your view of the modern additions. Visitors are invited to experience the past in a different way, while simultaneously immersing themselves in the modern, the art, music, and technology of the future.

We are looking for ways to merge a classical image with the modern. In addition, we are seeking artwork that speaks to both our older audience while also connecting with a younger target group. Building on these thoughts, we have come up with an idea for the logo of Bosburcht. How could we express this in visual language?

Digital Reinterpretation of Traditional Styles

We invite you to create a visual experience that brings traditional architectural styles and art movements together in an innovative way with digital techniques. The goal is to explore a dynamic interaction between classical elements and modern digital distortions.

Consider styles such as Neoclassicism, Impressionism, Baroque, Rococo, and Art Deco as sources of inspiration. For example, you could visualize geometric patterns flowing down walls as liquid objects, or traditional details bending and distorting in unexpected ways. Play with ideas of classical images that seem to melt or fragments floating through space, with the digital additions clearly visible. Use 3D projections to transform sculptures into abstract, moving artworks. Make the separation between traditional and digital elements clear, so that the digital distortions complement and enhance the classical beauty.

We are looking for a number of final products: digitally movable artwork for social media to announce the event, specific artists, and parts of the program. Additionally, we want to develop physical posters, a website, and visuals for stage designs or art installations. All of this will help connect the digital world with physical reality.

The idea is that these concepts should be sustainable for years to come, so you can easily create a completely new work that still stays close to this concept. In this way, our logo will remain recognizable yet surprising. It will radiate both the classical nature of the location and the forward-thinking character of the program.

Reshaping the Past

Examples of styles for a end product

For example, for this first edition, we could work with a neoclassical image that we distort in a digital way. Below are some images and a few digital distortions for inspiration. For instance, we could make the images melt, break apart into little balls and reassemble, tie the image into a knot, move the entire spectacle into a neon world, or have the snake crawl digitally over the image, iridescent and transparent. There are many possible ideas, and we’re very curious to see what you would come up with. The artwork can really be more than just a background; it can be a work of its own, and all communication should reflect that as well.

Deliverables

Initially, we would like to focus on the following deliverables:
